Graham is an historic town in Alamance county, North Carolina. It is one of the oldest towns in the Albemarle County. It is located in the Burlington, Albemarle County Metropolitan Statistical area. It was incorporated as a town in 1835. Since then it has become a center of commerce and has developed into a major agricultural center in North Carolina. It is home to several colleges, universities, and professional businesses, such as the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
Graham has been referred to as the ‘City of Churches’ as it is home to several different denominations. Among the most notable include the Roman Catholic Church, the Presbyterian Church and the Reformed Church of God. Other churches are Baptist denominations, which are very active in the community. There are also the First Church of Christ Scientist, the New Hampshire Baptist Convention, the Seventh Day Adventist Church, and the United Methodist Church. In addition, there are a number of private memberships, with the oldest being in the late nineteenth century.
Graham was incorporated as a town in Ab Alamance, on June 7, 1840. The first building that was constructed was the church. This building has served the town well, providing housing for many people and keeping them warm during the winter. After the Civil War it became a major textile manufacturing center and has been known to have the largest textile mill in North Carolina. Today it remains one of the largest textile mills in the state and has a number of industrial facilities. It has a thriving industrial park and produces high quality clothing for some of the world’s top brands.
